MedPundit provides a wealth of links about circumcision. As a non-religious person I had no idea that this day, January 1st, used to be celebrated as The Feast of the Circumcision, a religious holiday marking the day (8 days after Christmas, get it) that Christ was circumcised.
Now circumcision is controversial in some circles, and MedPundit links to Andrew Sullivan's argument against circumcision.
Obviously I'm a woman, and moreover I have no children, so this has never been a personal issue to me. I had one boyfriend over a decade ago who, quite late in life, got somewhat obsessed with the wrong done him by non-consensual circumcision. He had, however, plenty of "issues", shall we say, so I've always associated that kind of outrage with his kind of general trouble dealing with the world as it was. Unfair? Probably.
So, there you go. I thought: why not start the New Year off with something off my usual subject matter. Have a good day celebrating all this day stands for!
Happy New Year!
