Kevin MD points us to a pending bill in West Virginia. This bill would allow doctors to refuse to give CPR if they deemed it to be "medically ineffective." They could so refuse even if the patient had a living will requesting all life-saving measures to be undertaken.
So, it sounds a little scary. We are basically giving doctors the right to let someone die. Even so, I could be down with this. But not when we're simultaneously saying that patients can't make the same decisions for themselves...
One argument against assisted suicide is that it's too Godlike to let someone decide that there's no hope, and that the only way to alleviate their pain or prevent a very painful impending future is to exit early. Sounds like about the same Godlike powers West Virginia wants to grant to doctors.
So, what do you consumer-directed health care proponents think?
