It's no secret I've been sick. It's kind of a miracle that the S.O. and I have managed not to kill each other after 2 weeks cooped up together feeling not-so-spring-fresh.. I mentioned that I did have to leave my house last Wednesday to pick up a prescription and buy some food. I didn't mention the oddest thing that happened while at the grocery store.
It's just a bit of a testament to how you should really pay attention to those 'Do Not Operate Heavy Machinery' warnings on medication.
I lost my Safeway Club card years ago. And more than that, when I moved and changed phone numbers I didn't bother telling Safeway. So for literally six years now I have used my card by punching in the phone number from my old apartment into the key pad. (Somewhere the person who actually has that number now is wondering why they can't get a damn Safeway card.)
And last week when I went to enter it...I couldn't remember it. I shook my head, as though to clear the mental cobwebs. And numbers floated about in my head...the right numbers, but the order seemed not quite right. And because I didn't want to hold up the line of post-work Express Lane shoppers, and because I didn't want to bother to explain that no, it wasn't just my phone number, it was my phone number from over 6 years ago...I let it go and didn't get my discounts.
Maybe this kind of stuff happens to some of you all the time, but it really never happens to me. I remember names, phone numbers, birth dates etc. I'm famous for it.
Sure enough, the number was back in my head within 30 seconds of leaving the store. (And now I've been kind of obsessively repeating it in my head during spare moments.)
So, simply a sign of things to come as I age? A side-effect of illness and mucho OTC medication? A product of several days of sleep deprivation?
Probably all of the above. But it was a really weird feeling.
